Local news draws most US newspaper buyers

A survey in the United States asked: what is the main reason you subscribe to a local newspaper?

("Local papers" in the US generally refers to daily titles in big cities - almost all of which are monopoly publications).

Anyway, 49.6% of the respondents said local news was the biggest lure while 14% said it was national and international news.

Advertisers may take heart from the fact that 21% said the promotional coupons were of paramount importance.

Other reasons? Habit (7%), obituaries (3%) and columnists (2%).
